Entering The Magical Realm
In a holiday destination famous for its warm climate, scuba diving in Tenerife is developing rapidly. Whether a beginner or an experienced diver, there's something for everyone - it's also ideal for families on holiday as you can combine your diving and then join the non-divers in the family for other activities.
The year-round sunshine ensures that our waters here in the south of Tenerife remain warm and clear with temperatures ranging from 18°C in February up to 24°C in August. Visibility averages 15 metres and on exceptional days can be up to 40-50 metres. Each dive offers its own unique microcosm of marine life in a dramatic setting while the quickly cooling lava has created tunnels, caverns and swim-throughs. Whether your interest is in discovering the underwater world for the first time, taking a certification course in preparation for local diving back home and further holiday adventures, or as a certified diver adding to your logbook, Tenerife has something for you. ![]() Just this past week, the popular dive site of 'El Tanque' (The Basin) has been visited by large schools of barracuda, the majestic silver wolves of the sea, varying in size from half a metre to three times that size. "As we approached the spiralling school of barracuda barely moving against the light current, I couldn't help noticing how easy they made it seem to hang motionless in the blue while we instead had to make an effort to remain close to them. These are the moments when I feel truly honoured to be a visitor to the underwater environment." Meanwhile, at 'El Acuario' (The Aquarium), the resident loggerhead turtle Isabel continues to dazzle visitors. Home to almost every variety of marine life in the area, this artificial reef (a small sunken boat) offers divers a close look at stingrays, moray eels (several types), damselfish (both black and white), trumpet fish, garden eels, glass-eye snappers, octopus and occasionally large visiting pelagics. Accompanied by her entourage of rays, Isabel swims with you, nudging you if you are not attentive enough to her requests for a playmate. Isabel will hypnotise you with her grace, her beauty, and her serenity while the rays continue to frolic and cavort around you like puppies. As Stephanie, a recent diver, remarked: "This is why I learned to dive." |
