El Hierro > Reviews > History
El Hierro, a well tended island.
Following in the footsteps of Lanzarote, El Hierro has the honour of belonging to UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The title was earned in January of last year, thanks to the island’s unique natural scenery and exceptional ecosystem.Just 278 Km2 in size, El Hierro, the southernmost island of the archipelago, is a natural paradise and 60% of its terrain is protected under environmental laws. As part of the inhabitants’ commitment to keeping their island as unspoilt as possible, the town of Frontera, just a few minutes away from the Ethnographic Interpretation Centre, the Lizard Sanctuary and the Guinea Ecomuseum, has installed new solar-powered street lights. The town council hopes that this drive, launched with co-operation from the Ministry of Science and Technology, will encourage other alternative energy schemes that will help to maintain the balance of El Hierro’s ecosystem. Part of the Man and Biosphere Program, UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves, which includes a total of 341 reserves in 94 countries, was awarded the PrÃncipe de Asturias Prize for Concorde last month in recognition of its effort to preserve unique natural sites and communities that are a heritage of the whole world.La Gaceta Hotel
