Fuerteventura: far from the madding crowd
There’s one thing you can be guaranteed to find on Fuerteventura, and that is a good beach. On such a large and sparsely populated island, however, there are many little known stretches of sand out there just waiting to be found by tourists visiting for the first time. So if you feel inclined to get it away from it all, why not seek one of the less crowded beaches?
Giniginámar Ideal if you are looking for peace and quiet. The beach, with its black volcanic sand and pebbles, is bordered by palm trees and local plant species. It is advisable to take food and drink, even though there are restaurants in the next-door village of Giniginámar and, heading inland from the beach, there is a tourist complex on the western side of the valley. Juan Gómez This beach, some 400 metres long, is at the mouth of the Juan Gómez ravine at the southern end of the JandÃa peninsula. The stretch of golden sand is reached by turning off the road connecting Morro Jable with Punta de JandÃa and Cofete, about 300 metres before the road forks. Juan Gómez has all the advantages of Fuerteventura’s leeward beaches but is more solitary and is surrounded by almost untouched landscapes. La Pared Located to the south of the island, this beach is on the narrow strip of land known as La Pared that connects the southern JandÃa peninsula with the rest of Fuerteventura. It is a pebbly and black volcanic sand beach, in a small bay, with fairly rough seas. Close by is the village of La Pared and a few tourist complexes offering various restaurants and accomodation. Viejo Rey Strange though it may seem, Viejo Rey, literally next door to La Pared, is a long stretch of golden sand. This is a beautifully wild beach with plenty of sand dunes but, like its neighbour, rough seas are not for faint-hearted or inexperienced swimmers. Further south you will discover a chain of small beaches, ideal for anyone seeking seclusion. The only facilities – restaurants and accomodation – are at the northern end of the beach in the village of La Pared and the nearby tourist complexes. Ajuy This black sand beach is some 300 metres in length. The sea can be rough so it is not particularly recommendable for children. This is a really quiet area, however, and Ajuy itself is a very pleasant fishing village. The Ajuy caves are also nearby and, as the oldest part of the Canaries geologically speaking, it is an ideal place to spend time just taking in the scenery. La Gaceta Hotel
