Go through Sosúa and Cabarete and on to Gaspar Hernández. From Santo Domingo airport, take the Duarte-San Francisco Marcoris. The Dominican Republic shares the Island of Hispaniola with the Republic of Haiti. Covering an area of 48,400 km2, it is the second largest country in the Caribbean. Thanks to its climate and seemingly endless miles of beach, the Dominican Republic has become a top quality tourist destination connected with the world's leading cities. It has an estimated population of 7,600,000 inhabitants, a mixture of different, mainly urban influences, with around 2,000,000 inhabitants living in the capital, Santo Domingo. The landscape is varied and includes Lake Enriquillo, which, at 144 metres below sea level, is the lowest point in the Caribbean, and Pico Duarte, the highest in the Caribbean, with an altitude of 3,175 metres. The Cibao Valley is the main agricultural area. CLIMATE: The climate in the coastal area is mainly warm, as is typical in the tropics. The temperatures are cooler in the middle of the country. The average temperature all year long is 25ºC, or 77ºF. CURRENCY: The unit of currency in the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso, with an official exchange rate of: DR$15.35 per US dollar; DR$2.38 per French Franc; and DR$17.00 per Euro. SHOPPING: Haggling is accepted in markets and small shops, but not in department stores, where prices are fixed. The most interesting items are handicrafts, pottery, typical naive paintings, coffee, tobacco and rum. International credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) are accepted in most of the country's shopping centres and restaurants. Locally:Tourist Attractions The BAHÍA PRÍNCIPE SAN JUAN HOTEL stands in an unspoilt area of the Dominican Republic, better known as the "Green Coast" because of its beautiful beaches and lush vegetation. This area seems to have been blessed by the hand of God, because it is truly amazing to see the myriad contrasts between the blues of the sky and sea and the intense greens of its fields and mountains. The Green Coast covers the municipality of Gaspar Hernández, crossing through Río San Juan, Cabrera and ending up in Nagua, thus forming a belt that is a veritable paradise. The route from Río San Juan to Cabrera and Nagua is peppered with natural beauty spots such as "the Taino cave" (where objects belonging to the Taino race can supposedly still be found) and the natural pool, which is fed by water from the source of a river that re-emerges fifteen kilometres out to sea. The pool is set on the mountainside and is only accessible from the sea, by taking a small boat from the Cabrera harbour beach. In the Bretón area, between the municipalities of Cabrera and Río San Juan, stands the Cabo Francés Viejo nature park, a heavenly spot on a headland with stunning views over the area's beautiful cliffs and beaches. And the landscape's beauty is matched by the simplicity and warmth of the local people, and their lifestyle, customs and traditions. CULTURAL SIGHTSEEING Santo Domingo has a wide range of sights where you'll be able to appreciate our country's culture and history, including the following: Museum of the Dominican Man. National History and Geography Museum. Natural History Museum. Museum of Modern Art. Colonial District. Catedral Primada de América. Museum of the Royal Palaces. Alcázar de Colón. Casa del Cordón. Ozama Fortress. Ruins of San Francisco. Faro a Colón: With the mausoleum that houses the ashes of the Discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus. Botanical Gardens: With a wide variety of local plant life covering 2 million square metres. National Zoological Park: One of the largest in Latin America, with a wide variety of animals. National Aquarium: Scientific, educational and cultural park showcasing our marine and fresh-water plants and animals. Los Tres Ojos Nature Park: With three fresh-water lakes, one of which has stalactites and stalagmites, and a fourth that is sulphurous. Model Market: The city's main handicrafts centre. DOMINICAN TYPICAL FOOD Mangú (puree of green plantains stuffed with meats such as beef, lobster or shrimp). Sancocho (meat and yucca stew). Mondongo (tripe stew). Rice and beans. Mofongo (ground green plantains with garlic). Fried longaniza (salami). Fritos verdes (fried and flattened green plantains). Goat stew. Rice with chicken. Rice pudding. Dulce de leche. Quesillos (cheese-filled tortillas). The Area The many Tourist Attractions all along the Green Coast include: In Gaspar Hernández: The most important and attractive beaches are La Ermita, Rogelio and Magante (on whose shore the Bahía Príncipe Hotel stands). This area still retains traces of the Ciguayo Indians, (the aboriginal inhabitants) at the renowned "Cave of the Indians" and the "Casa del Agua", a series of caverns whose rocks spout forth crystal-clear water, which gives the spot a rare beauty that proves irresistible to tourists. Besides the beautiful beaches, there are rivers and spas, including the circular "La Poza del Ojo de Agua", and Aguas Azules. In Río San Juan: This area stands out from other areas of the Caribbean and the Dominican Republic, because it still has some fifteen unspoilt and deserted beaches where tourists are free to enjoy the majestic natural landscape that acts as a backdrop to the sea's cool clear water and the tropical climate. Of all these beaches, Playa Escondida and Playa Grande stand out in particular, the latter being the most beautiful in the Dominican Republic. No reference to Río San Juan would be complete without mentioning the "Gri-Gri Lagoon", where an underground river rears its head on the surface inland before heading out to sea along a mangrove-covered canal that is home to numerous marine species and birds. A boat trip on the Gri-Gri lagoon will leave a lasting smile on any tourist's face, the fond memory of a holiday spent in the Dominican Republic.
