Torremolinos, the largest of the Costa's resorts - Benalmadena with its chic new Puerto Marina - Fuengirola the up-and-coming resort – Mijas with its breathtaking village (Mijas Pueblo) perched on the Mountainside and its rambling beaches and urbanizations (Mijas Costa) – Marbella and Puerto Banus, the choice of the rich and famous - and Nerja, the most popular destination to the east of Malaga.


The municipal district of Mijas, has three areas, takes in the territory spanning the mountain range after which the village is named down to the sea, meaning the municipality covers, sometimes quite steeply, the relatively short distance leading down from Mijas’ town tallest peak (1,130 metres) to sea-level right on the coast. With a population of over 10,000, Mijas is located squarely on the coast, right in the heart of Mijas Costa, an expansive residential area with numerous property developments stretching along the coast. Actually Mijas Cala, an ancient fisher town, is two separate areas while "Mijas", refers to a coastal area, much of the hinterland includes part of what appears to be Fuengirola.


The Vik Gran Hotel Costa del Sol is in Mijas Cala, an area marked by lots of pretty coves and beaches with housing complexes (urbanizations) behind. Most of the complexes are carefully designed to incorporate Spanish influence and care has been taken not to produce concrete monstrosities, but extensive building development means that it looks likely that many of the urbanizations will soon join to form a town of their own. Mijas Cala offers some of the most famous golf courses.
