GASTRONOMY The Port of Huelva occupies a very important position on the so-called 'shellfish route'. Fresh prawns, shrimp and scampi arrive at its fish market daily, along with other marine species such as sea bream, gilthead, snapper, white bream, skate and sole. This cornucopia of fresh catch is used to prepare such mouthwatering dishes as shark-meat with tomato, snapper and stewed onions; cuttlefish with broad beans and skate in paprika. The mountain ranges of Huelva provide the finest cured hams in the country as well as a superb range of cured meats and other regional sausage products. Dessert options include outstanding fresh fruits from the region, such as juicy Nava peaches, melons and watermelons from Cortegana, quince from Fuenteheridos, strawberries from Lepe. For real sweettooths, there is also "hornazo" sponge cake, "tocino de cielo" (a rich egg and caramel pudding) and little pastries from Moguer. SHOPPING The most typical traditional crafts of the region are baskets and panels woven from cane; carved wooden objects; cowboy boots and leather goods; rugs, fabrics, traditional costumes, fans and castanets. In the capital, the main shopping areas can be found in the squares of Las Monjas, La Merced, Doce de Octubre and Punto, as well as the pedestrian-only street of La Concepción and the Isla Chica district. Besides a new commercial center has been opened in Huelva city: it is the Aqualon Puerto. Every Friday, a traditional market is held on the site of Huelva's trade fairs.
